How your bill is laid out
Most O2 bills follow the same order each month: summary total, airtime plan, device plan if you have one, out-of-allowance charges, bolt-ons, one-off charges, discounts, VAT. Reading it in order answers most questions on its own.
The summary
The summary shows the total due and the date it leaves your account. It is the sum of every section below, so a change here almost always starts in one of those sections.
Airtime plan
Your airtime plan covers calls, texts and the data allowance you chose, priced per month. O2 typically reviews these prices each April.
If this line jumped without you changing anything, check the date against O2's pricing cycle.
Device plan: a separate credit agreement
If you took a handset through O2, the device cost typically sits on its own line as a separate credit agreement, not part of your airtime plan. On most plans the two run on different terms, and paying off one early does not clear the other.
Outside your allowance
Calls, texts or data used beyond your monthly allowance appear as a separate charge, at O2's published out-of-bundle rate. These rates rise each 1 April.
If this line is larger than expected, your usage may be running ahead of your allowance most months.
Bolt-ons
A bolt-on is usually an add-on you chose, such as extra data or roaming, billed separately from your core plan. On most bills each bolt-on has its own name and price. If you see one you do not recognise, note its exact name before you call.
One-off charges
These are single, non-recurring items: a replacement SIM, a late-payment charge, or a one-time call to a premium number. They will not repeat unless the same event happens again.
Discounts
Any ongoing discount, such as a loyalty or bundle reduction, is shown as a negative line that reduces your total. If a discount has a known end date, check for it, since the bill will not warn you when it stops.
VAT
UK mobile bills include VAT at the standard rate. It may show as one line, or be built into the price of each item, depending on your plan. The VAT figure should move in step with the rest of the bill.
Payment date
This is the date O2 collects the total shown, usually by direct debit. It usually stays the same each month unless you changed your billing date when you joined or switched plans.
Spend cap
A spend cap is usually a limit you set on charges outside your allowance, so on most plans you cannot be billed past it without agreeing first. If your bill often sits right at the cap, your out-of-allowance use is likely higher than your plan covers — worth raising when you call.

Why does my O2 bill show two separate plans?
Because it usually is two agreements. The airtime plan pays for calls, texts and data. The device plan is a separate credit agreement for your handset, on different terms.
Can phoneswitcher explain a charge I don't recognise?
Yes. We help you work out what a line item means before your O2 call. We cannot look at your account.
What is a spend cap and why does mine keep getting reached?
A spend cap is usually a limit on charges outside your allowance. If you reach it often, your out-of-allowance use is probably higher than your plan covers.
Does phoneswitcher charge a fee to explain my bill?
No fee is charged by us. See the call details above for the current cost of calling.
Is phoneswitcher affiliated with O2?
No. phoneswitcher is an independent information service with no affiliation with Virgin Media O2 or Telefonica UK. We help you prepare for your network call.
