O2 Bill Help: Why Is My O2 Bill Higher This Month?
A higher O2 bill almost always has a specific cause you can find on the bill itself. This page walks through the usual reasons and what to check before you call.

What usually causes this
Most O2 bill increases come from one of the causes below. Each one leaves a trace on your bill or your O2 notice. You can usually confirm it yourself before you call.
Your first bill is pro-rated
Your first O2 bill often covers a part-month from your join date. It also includes the first full month, paid in advance. This makes the opening bill look larger than later ones. It typically shows as two line items, one for the part-month and one for the full month, though the exact labelling can vary.
Out-of-allowance use
Calls or texts to 084, 087 or 09 numbers, MMS picture messages, and data beyond your allowance are typically charged separately from your plan. These appear under "outside your allowance" or a similar heading, usually itemised by date and number.
Roaming or international use
On many plans, EU roaming data is included at no extra cost up to a fair-use limit. Use outside the EU, or beyond that limit, is typically billed separately unless a roaming bolt-on covers it. The same often applies to calls and texts you make to international numbers from the UK. These typically show as a separate roaming or international section with the country and date, though exact presentation can vary.
The April price rise has applied
O2 applies an annual price change to airtime plans each April. This appears as a plan-price change on the bill dated from your April billing cycle. It applies even if your usage has not changed.
A bolt-on started or ended
Adding a data, roaming or call bolt-on adds its price to that bill; letting one expire removes a discount or allowance you were relying on. Both typically show as a bolt-on line with a start or end date next to it.
A discount has ended
Introductory or loyalty discounts usually run for a fixed number of months. Once a discount period ends, the bill returns to the full plan price. This shows as the discount line disappearing from the bill compared with previous months.
A device-plan change
On plans that separate airtime from a device plan, a change to the device agreement typically changes the device-plan line on its own.
A changed spend cap
If your spend cap was raised, lowered or removed, more charges may now go through. These would otherwise have been blocked. Your spend-cap setting and its current limit are usually shown in your account or app. Blocked charges are noted there too, when the cap stops a charge.
A late-payment charge
A missed or late payment can typically add a late-payment charge to the next bill. This applies on most O2 plans. This typically appears as its own line, distinct from your plan and bolt-on charges.
A mid-cycle upgrade
Upgrading your device or plan partway through a billing cycle can typically split the charge. One bill may typically show a part-charge for the old plan and a part-charge for the new one. These typically appear as two plan lines covering different date ranges.

Can phoneswitcher get me a refund?
No. We cannot access your O2 account, issue a refund or change a charge. Only O2 can do that. We help you work out why a charge appears and what to say to O2 about it.
Why has my O2 bill gone up when I haven't changed anything?
The most common reason is the annual price rise O2 applies in April, which happens even if your usage stays the same. Out-of-allowance use, a bolt-on, or a discount ending can also raise the total without you changing your plan.
Is my first O2 bill always higher than later bills?
Often, yes. A first bill usually covers a part-month from your join date plus the first full month in advance, known as pro-rata charging, so the total can look larger than it will be from the second bill onward.
Can phoneswitcher cancel a bolt-on or change my plan for me?
No. We cannot change anything on your O2 account. We can help you spot which bolt-on or plan change is on your bill, so you know exactly what to ask O2 to look at or end.
