Understanding O2 Roaming Charges in Europe and the USA
Roaming charges confuse most O2 customers. We explain how they work, so you know what to check before calling.

What usually causes a roaming charge
A roaming charge usually appears because your phone used data, calls or texts outside your plan's covered area. That area normally costs nothing extra. On most plans this area is a defined list of European destinations. The rest of the world is priced separately. The charge can also appear by accident, for example near a border, on a ferry or during a flight.
Your bill shows roaming charges in a separate section, labelled by date and destination. If a figure there looks wrong, that is a question for O2, not for us.
Europe: the inclusive zone and its limits
On most O2 plans, using your phone across a set list of European destinations draws on your UK data allowance. It does not cost extra.
This inclusive use has a fair-use limit for time spent abroad. Spend longer than that in any four months and O2 may apply its own roaming rates. Destinations and limits are confirmed on O2's published roaming pages.
USA and the rest of the world: daily bolt-ons
Outside the inclusive European zone, O2 typically prices roaming by the day. A daily travel bolt-on covers a wide list of destinations, including the USA. A data-only bolt-on can be sized to the trip instead. Check which applies before you travel.
Inadvertent roaming: ferries, borders and flights
Your phone connects to whichever signal is strongest, not necessarily a UK one. Charges can appear even when you stayed in the UK:
- Near a land border, where a foreign mast is sometimes closer.
- On a ferry, where signal can come from either coastline.
- On a cruise ship, often billed as international roaming.
- During a flight, unless you switch to flight mode.
Since Ofcom's roaming-alert rules took effect, O2 should typically warn you when roaming on an unexpected network. Check your text and app alerts. The date and source are listed above and on our sources page.
The roaming spend cap
O2 publishes its own roaming spend-limit rules on its site and in the My O2 app. Check these before travelling.
Roaming versus international calls
Roaming is using your phone abroad. An international call is dialling a foreign number from the UK, priced and billed separately. If a bill looks high, check whether the cost sits in the roaming section or the international-calls section. Do this before you speak to O2.

What to check before your call with O2
Note this so the call is quicker.
- The date, destination and amount of the charge on your bill.
- Whether you were in the inclusive European zone or outside it.
- Whether a daily or data bolt-on was active on that date.
- Any inadvertent-roaming text alert you received.
- Whether your plan has a spend cap, shown in the My O2 app.

Can you remove my roaming charge?
No. We cannot access your O2 account, view your bill or remove any charge. If you think a roaming charge is wrong, contact O2 using the number on your bill or in the My O2 app.
Why was I charged for roaming when I didn't leave the UK?
Your phone can connect to a network over the border, on a ferry, on a cruise ship or during a flight. This may register as roaming even though you did not travel abroad. Check your notifications and turn off data roaming to avoid this.
Is roaming the same as calling abroad from the UK?
No. Roaming is using your phone while abroad. Calling or texting a foreign number from the UK is an international call, priced and billed separately.
Does my data allowance work the same way abroad as it does in the UK?
On most plans, EU use within the inclusive zone draws from your UK allowance up to a fair-use limit. Outside that zone, O2 may apply its own roaming rates or a bolt-on instead.
How do I stop a roaming bolt-on from running up charges?
O2 publishes bolt-on prices and durations on its own site and in the My O2 app. Checking these before you travel is the clearest way to keep control of the cost.
